Mickey’s

I photographed Mickey’s Diner in downtown St. Paul for an article about environmental fiction writing in the English department’s newsletter (look for the Spring 2006 issue).  We used different photos in the newsletter so this one has never really seen the light of day before.  Time in the cold well spent.

Doors

The doors of O’Shaughnessy Hall catch some nice light on fall mornings.  In this case I chose to put more emphasis on the doors by using one of our new lenses - a Canon 45mm tilt shift lens.  Tilt shift lenses allow you to shift the plane of focus left or right, up or down.  So instead of the plane of focus running parallel with the camera’s sensor or film, it actually runs at an angle.  This produces the “slice of focus” effect you see here.

Library by Dark

Library by Dark

I took this photo in March of 2007 during the time of year when nothing looks good.  Piles of sludge on the ground, no leaves on the trees.  That probably explains why this scene of UST’s O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library has never been used.  It’s not the greatest image with which to promote the place.  To be honest, that’s one of the reasons I like it.
